Why do you need a data management solution?
Data Management - Step 1: Data Classification
To manage data, you must first know what it is. Data must be classified at
its point of creation based on a broad range of criteria that differ from
one organization to the next.
Data Classification can save you time and money!
From a cost-savings perspective, managing data generally reduces
the total cost of ownership for storage. By filtering out 'stale'
data from the storage repository, that is, data that is no longer
of any value to the organization, companies can free up enormous
storage capacity and forestall additional spending on storage hardware,
which today accounts for between 30 and 70 percent of annual IT hardware
budgets.
Data Deduplication?
Deduplication can be thought of as the process of "unduplicating" data.
In the context of disk storage, deduplication refers to any algorithm that
searches for duplicate data objects (e.g., blocks, chunks, files) and discards
those duplicates. When duplicate data is detected, it is not retained, but
instead a "data pointer" is modified so that the storage system references an
exact copy of the data object already stored on disk.
Benefits of Data Duplication
Data deduplication suppliers claim reduction ratios of anywhere between 10:1 and
50:1. Such ratios allow you to reduce the sheer physical amount of storage
capacity you need to use. The two key benefits that flow from this are that you
can move from tape to disc, and in some cases you can reduce data volumes so far
that back up via IP networks becomes possible.
